German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called it important to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin and stated that he would continue to do so. He said this in an interview with the DPA agency.
“It is absolutely essential to talk to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, and I will continue to do so, as will the President of France,” — said Scholz.
At the same time, the German chancellor said that Moscow cannot dictate the terms of the peace agreement to Kyiv. According to him, Russia should “withdraw troops” and then reach an agreement that is acceptable to Ukraine.
Answering the agency's question about the timely delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine for military operations in the Donbass, Scholz said that they would be delivered on time. According to him, Berlin will supply an anti-missile system that “is capable of saving Odessa or Kyiv.” In addition, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States decided to supply Ukraine with multiple launch rocket systems, Scholz said.
Commenting on Western initiatives on a diplomatic solution to the situation, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, in a column for Foreign Affairs, called “erroneous” idea of a possible compromise with Moscow.

In his opinion, Russia “rejected” all meaningful negotiations, as he expects Western support for Ukraine to begin to wane over time. In this regard, he called on the United States and European countries to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine, which needs “more weapons” to “turn the tide.”
Russia is conducting a special military operation in Ukraine since February 24. President Vladimir Putin called its goal “denazification” and “demilitarization” neighboring country. At the end of March, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the main task of the Russian troops at this stage — “complete liberation of Donbass”.
Moscow and Kyiv had been negotiating a peace settlement since the end of February, but they were suspended in April. Russia declared that it was ready to return to them. The need to continue negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv was also announced in the West, including in Britain and France.
