Russian troops and LNR forces took control of Severodonetsk (since 2014 it was the regional center of the Luhansk region of Ukraine instead of Lugansk) at the end of May, reported Head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the residential areas of the city were “liberated”, but Ukrainian military personnel remained in industrial areas, including the territory of the largest chemical plant in Ukraine, Azot.

Lysichansk is located southwest of Severodonetsk and remains the last large city within the borders of the Luhansk region of Ukraine, which is not under the control of the LPR. The republic's ambassador to Russia, Rodion Miroshnik, said earlier that the People's Militia took control of the only road from Kyiv-controlled Seversk to Lysichansk, cutting off 5-7 thousand Ukrainian military from the supply.
