The President of the Chamber of Advocates of Udmurtia, Dmitry Talantov, who defended the interests of journalist Ivan Safronov, was detained in the case of spreading fakes about the actions of the Russian army, RBC was told in the press service of the Investigative Committee.
A criminal case was initiated against Talantov under paragraph “d” Part 2 Art. 207.3 of the Criminal Code (public dissemination of deliberately false information about the use of the Russian Armed Forces, committed out of political hatred). Under this article, a lawyer faces a fine of up to 5 million rubles, forced labor for up to five years, or imprisonment for up to ten years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to five years.
According to investigators, in April, Talantov, on his page in one of the social networks, “under the guise of reliable messages, published deliberately false information.” on the activities of the Russian military involved in the special operation in Ukraine. Searches will be carried out at home and at the place of work of the lawyer.
The lawyer Yevgeny Smirnov, who also defends Safronov, also told RBC that the case was initiated in the case of fakes about the army. “The case was initiated in Moscow under Part 2 of Art. 207.3, no contact with him, — he said.
Talantov announced his detention in Udmurtia on the morning of 28 June. Then the lawyer wrote that he was being taken to the regional department of the UK.
Talantov represented the interests of a former employee of “Kommersant” and Vedomosti, adviser to the head of Roskosmos Ivan Safronov. Since July 7, 2020, Safronov has been in a pre-trial detention center. He was charged with treason, under this article the journalist will face up to 20 years in prison. According to the investigation, Safronov passed secret information to Czech and German intelligence. He himself does not admit his guilt and connects the criminal prosecution with his professional activities.

Last year, another lawyer defending Safronov went abroad,— Ivan Pavlov (included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of foreign media agents). In Russia, he is wanted, the investigation accuses the lawyer of disclosing the data of the preliminary investigation. Already after his departure, in December, Pavlov announced a document received from the Ministry of Justice, which states that a case of treason was also opened against him.
