Turkey is trying to negotiate telephone conversations with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters. The broadcast was translated into English on the PresserWatch Twitter account (TRT project).
“Our colleagues are consulting on the subject of telephone conversations with Putin and Zelensky”, — he said.
He will discuss grain exports with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine. Erdogan also noted that Turkey continues to make efforts to ensure that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine meet in person.
Since the beginning of Russia's military operation in Ukraine, Turkey has repeatedly offered mediation in negotiations. The last face-to-face meeting of the Russian and Ukrainian delegations took place in Istanbul on March 29. Later, Turkey offered to hold a meeting of foreign ministers and presidents in one of its cities. The Kremlin insisted that the meeting of the leaders would be possible only when the delegations worked out concrete proposals.
On June 21, a delegation from the Turkish Ministry of Defense traveled to Moscow to negotiate the safe export of grain from Ukraine, which is blocked in ports countries. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called the talks constructive. He specified that a meeting could be held in Istanbul with the participation of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN.

A week later, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the discussion of the grain issue had reached the “moment of truth”. UN officials are negotiating separately with the Ukrainian and Russian sides to bring grain and fertilizers from these countries to the international market, he said.
The day before, at the NATO summit, the Turkish president called for more efforts to stop hostilities in Ukraine.
